Vehicle Theft Advisory

This is a timely warning regarding vehicle thefts that have occurred at the University at Buffalo. 

UB Police are warning owners who drive a 2011 to 2021 Hyundai or a 2011 to 2021 Kia that they may be targeted by car thieves.

It has been well publicized that, due to a design flaw in these vehicles, a regular USB cable can be used to turn the ignition tumbler, start the vehicle, and release the steering lock. In turn, this allows the Hyundai or Kia to be driven away and started again at any time using the same cable.

The thieves specifically target certain vehicles with a physical key slot as push-button start models can't be bypassed as easily. Hyundai owners are urged to check the Hyundai site to see if they need the free anti-theft software upgrade. www.Hyundaiantitheft.com.

UB Police urges you to take the following actions to secure your vehicle:

Zoom image: Four layers of protection to guard against vehicle theft NICB recommends drivers follow four layers of protection to guard against vehicle theft: COMMON SENSE Vehicle owners should always remove keys from the ignition, lock doors and windows, and park in well-lit areas. WARNING DEVICES These include visible and audible alarms. Aftermarket alarms are available for all makes and models of cars. Visual devices include column collars, steering wheel locks, and brake locks. IMMOBILIZING DEVICES The third layer of protection prevents thieves from bypassing the ignition and hot-wiring the vehicle. Some examples are smart keys; fuse cut-offs; kill switches; starter, ignition, and fuel pump disablers; and wireless ignition authentication. TRACKING DEVICES Tracking devices are very effective in helping authorities recover stolen vehicles. Some systems combine GPS and wireless technologies to allow remote monitoring of a vehicle. If the vehicle is moved, the system will alert the owner, and the vehicle can be tracked via computer.

Four layers of protection to guard against vehicle theft

  • First and foremost, apply a physical steering wheel lock bar (and for students…) – see below for information on how you can obtain one of these free of charge from UB Police
  • Always turn off the ignition and remove your keys
  • Close all windows and lock all doors
  • Activate your vehicle alarm system
  • Park in high traffic or well-lit areas when possible
  • Remove all valuables from the vehicle

Members of the community are urged to be vigilant at all times. Report any unusual circumstances or suspicious persons and activities to the University Police at 716-645-2222 as soon as possible.

The UB Police have received a supply of steering wheel locks to distribute for free to students who drive a Hyundai or Kia. In order to claim a wheel lock, come to Bissell Hall on the UB North Campus and bring your vehicle registration and student ID. The wheel locks will be distributed first come, first served.
