University Police Investigating Reports of Religious Solicitation

Several members of the university community have reported being approached by people soliciting for a church group and inviting people to attend bible study classes. There is heightened concern about these solicitors based on a social media rumor that they are actually a front for a sex trafficking organization.

The University Police are aware of this and are monitoring the matter.

A similar issue involving the same group came up in April of this year and the New York State Police determined that this church was not involved in any sex trafficking activity. After receiving complaints earlier this week, UB investigators verified that it was the same group. This activity, while concerning to some people, is innocuous and legal.

While religious solicitation by outside groups is legal in the public spaces of the university, it is prohibited in residential spaces or other areas closed to the general public.

We encourage all members of our community to report suspicious behavior of any kind as soon as possible by calling (716) 645-2222.
