Air quality information

Published July 20, 2026

Members of the UB community should be aware that the Buffalo area continues to be impacted by poor air quality due to Canadian wildfire smoke moving through the region and state.

Air Quality Index values, as measured by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, could range from levels that are deemed “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” to “Unhealthy.”

During periods of poor Air Quality Index levels, all members of the UB community — not just those who have heart and lung issues — are advised to limit their time outdoors.

Additional precautions include:

  • Keeping windows closed and using air conditioning if available.
  • Taking more frequent breaks, limiting strenuous activities and considering wearing a high-quality mask such as an N95 if outside for extended periods during the advisory.
  • Calling their health care provider or going to an urgent care facility if experiencing serious difficulty breathing.

Members of the university community are encouraged to check the AirNow website, which provides the most up to date Air Quality Index (AQI) levels for the area.

UB officials also encourage any units that are hosting events outdoors during periods of poor air quality to contact UB Environment, Health and Safety for guidance.

University officials continue to monitor conditions. Additional updates will be posted as necessary.
